Canyon Lake – A Small Resort Town With a Big Lake

Canyon Lake is located one hour from Austin and one hour from San Antonio on highway 306, this little town offers 80 miles of shoreline, 8 public parks and one beautiful marina. The most popular park and main attraction, is Overlook Park. Located at Canyon Dam on South Access Road, it is the locals’ favorite spot to hop in the water. One can fish, float, or just laze in the sun. Bring a picnic and your shade umbrella and stay till the sun goes down.

Right up the road from the lake is the Guadalupe River.  Park your car along the road on the grass, rent a tube and drop on in. The route is approximately one mile and takes 21/2 hours to complete. The temperature of the Guadalupe ranges from 71-76 degrees Fahrenheit and feels very pleasant on those hot Texas days. While you’re floating down the river you may catch one of the more unique sights along the route- a Whitewater concert!  The river serves as a backdrop to this uncommonly beautiful stage.  Whitewater on the Horseshoe hosts an array of popular acts of varying genres all year long. Watch from the river in your tube or buy a ticket and come inside- this outdoor venue with spectacular views of the surrounding cliffs, hills, and water is always a fun music going experience.

When it’s time to eat, Canyon Lake pacts a surprisingly big gastronomic punch for its size. Gennaro’s Trattoria is one of the best Italian restaurants this side of the Mississippi-no joke- and Lucky’s is a traditional Americana sports bar that both locals and tourists frequent. Whether you come during the high season or off season, you will find Canyon Lake a nice little stop on your tour of the Hill Country.
