Discover San Marcos & Martindale
Welcome to San Marcos- The longest continuously inhabited place in North America! San Marcos is a bustling college town located on IH35 thirty minutes from Austin and one hour from San Antonio.
Abounding with activity year-round you are never at a loss for entertainment. Start with the outlet malls. Sighted as one of the premier shopping experiences in the nation, the San Marcos Outlet Mall boasts over 300 stores- everything from Gucci to Adidas- and a million square feet of retail space and plenty of places to eat. Then you can head over to Dick’s Classic Garage Car Museum where there is a stunning array of vintage cars from the early 20th Century. Stop by Wonder World, the quirky little theme park established in 1905. It runs over the Balcones Fault Line and is Texas’ first show cave. There is a wildlife park, the famous anti-gravity house, and the 110 foot observation tower allowing gorgeous panoramic views of San Marcos.
If nightlife is what you’re looking for, San Marcos has that in spades. Cheatham Street Warehouse is revered for its Wednesday night singer-songwriter circles- it is where a young George Strait got his start! The San Marcos Square is where you will find tons of restaurants, bars, shops, and the newly opened LBJ museum. Catch a play at Texas State University from the talented Theatre and Dance students or a football game at the newly renovated Bobcat Stadium where the NCAA Division II Bobcats play.
The crystal clear San Marcos River runs right through the middle of town and is the soul of this great city. According to Native American legend it is the real location of the Fountain of Youth. You can tube all year long, partake in a night paddle board tour, or kayak the 75.2 miles of its calming waters. You can also catch the beginning of the world famous Texas Water Safari in June. This 262 mile kayak race begins in San Marcos and ends at the Gulf of Mexico. With its constant temperature of 72 degrees, the river is always an option.
Located just outside of San Marcos is the town of Martindale if you prefer a little slower pace. Martindale, established in 1855, is best known in recent years as a favorite Hollywood destination for filming movies. “A Perfect World”, starring Clint Eastwood and Kevin Costner, and “The Newton Boys”, starring Matthew McConaughey and Ethan Hawke were filmed there.
