Wimberley offers ‘a little bit of Heaven’ in the Hill Country. The Texas Hill Country is famous for its beautiful live oak and cypress trees, the hills, the winding roads and the beautiful scenery. Located along Cypress Creek and Blanco River, it is a popular vacation spot. As one of the prettiest areas of the Hill Country, this ‘little bit of Heaven’ has become one of the most popular destinations. As a result, you will find many things to do for couples, individuals and families. Additionally, the town is located only about 45 minutes southwest of Austin and 60 minutes northeast of San Antonio.
Austin is one of the jewels of any Texas Hill Country destination trip must include Texas’ state capital. Austin is as diverse as a city can be. The city’s motto ‘Keep Austin Weird‘ sums it up. No where else can you find the best BBQ, diverse music, world-famous street performers, Formula 1 and MotoGP racing and much, much more!
Austin Area
Welcome to Blanco- a tiny gem tucked in the heart of the Hill Country! Located an hour from both Austin and San Antonio, Blanco offers the prototypical Texas experience. Start by taking advantage of one of the more conveniently located state parks. Blanco State Park is 105 acres of fun located right off U.S. Highway 281. The park’s most popular activity is fishing. The Blanco River is teeming with bass, rainbow trout, catfish, and perch. Guests can obtain all the fishing equipment needed at the park for free as part of the park ranger’s Learn-To-Fish program- you don’t even need a fishing license! The constant sixty-eight degree water temperature and direct sunlight guarantees the perfect swimming experience during those hot Texas months.
Canyon Lake is a small resort town with a big lake. Located one hour from Austin and one hour from San Antonio on highway 306, this little town offers 80 miles of shoreline, 8 public parks and one beautiful marina. The most popular park and main attraction, is Overlook Park. Located at Canyon Dam on South Access Road, it is the locals’ favorite spot to hop in the water. One can fish, float, or just laze in the sun. Bring a picnic and your shade umbrella and stay till the sun goes down.

Driftwood is a beautiful (tiny) Texas town in the heart of the Hill Country. Although the population may be small, the heart of this quaint Texas town is huge. Roughly 40 minutes from Austin and under two hours from San Antonio, the history of Driftwood is rather straightforward. As a result, the hospitality and charm is genuine and welcoming.
Welcome to Dripping Springs-the Gateway to the Hill Country! Located twenty-five miles west of Austin and an hour and a half from San Antonio, this little town offers abundant natural beauty and plenty of outdoor activity. Start with Dripping Spring’s most popular attraction- Hamilton Pool Preserve. This natural wonder was created over 8000 years ago by a subterranean river collapse creating the magnificent fifty foot waterfall and grotto enjoyed today. The park limits the amount of people at the pool at one time, therefore reservations are required during the peak summer months.
Dripping Springs
Fischer, Texas is not an excursion, but a destination in its own right. Found along the winding back country roads of Comal County, Fischer incorporates the best of the Hill Country- a nice drive, stunning views, fresh air, and old country stores and bars. Along FM 181 (FM stands for Farm to Market), the old Fischer Store is where you can stop for a snack. It was once the post office, a bank, and a saloon- though not all at once! Fischer Hall is the place where townspeople gather for weekly dances in the summertime and is a popular venue for social gatherings. Right around the corner is the Fischer Bowling Club where an old German form of bowling called nine-pin is played. Outside of Europe, Texas is the only place it’s enjoyed. This is most certainly a nod to the rich German heritage found in and around the Hill Country.
Johnson City is a classic little Hill Country town situated about an hour from both Austin and San Antonio on highway 290. Founded in 1879 by James Polk Johnson along the banks of the Pedernales River, Johnson City offers plenty of wonderful outdoor activities. Start with Pedernales Falls State Park. Conveniently located right off of highway 281, this state park offers hike-and-bike trails, swimming, tubing, fishing, and camping. You can also participate in geocaching- the modern day equivalent of a treasure hunt! It is perfect for outdoorsmen of all skill levels.
Johnson City
German influence provides a variety of activities for couples and families. Big city entertainment options with small town charm and beauty can be found nearly half-way between Austin and San Antonio.
New Braunfels
Fredericksburg offers the essence of a pure Hill Country experience. Dating back as far as 1846, the city’s German heritage runs deep. As a result, amazing food, incredible brews and hospitality wait for you! Locals believe in welcoming visitors with exceptional museums and attractions. With so many things to see and do, plan ahead and your next visit will deliver life-long memories.
Welcome to San Marcos- The longest continuously inhabited place in North America! San Marcos is a bustling college town located on IH35 thirty minutes from Austin and one hour from San Antonio. Abounding with activity year-round you are never at a loss for entertainment. Start with the outlet malls. Sighted as one of the premier shopping experiences in the nation, the San Marcos Outlet Mall boasts over 300 stores- everything from Gucci to Adidas- and a million square feet of retail space and plenty of places to eat. Then you can head over to Dick’s Classic Garage Car Museum where there is a stunning array of vintage cars from the early 20th Century. Stop by Wonder World, the quirky little theme park established in 1905. It runs over the Balcones Fault Line and is Texas’ first show cave. There is a wildlife park, the famous anti-gravity house, and the 110 foot observation tower allowing gorgeous panoramic views of San Marcos.

Nature lovers will adore all the outdoor opportunities in the area. The Guadalupe River State Park is a natural area that offers canoeing and hiking along 4 miles of river. Horseshoe Bay Texas began as a small resort idea back in 1972 when Wayne and Norman Hurd began working on their dream.
